Sir Charles Todd was Postmaster General, Superintendant of Telegraphs, and Government Astronomer of the Province of South Australia. He was responsible for building the overland telegraph linking Adelaide to Darwin in 1872. With the completion of an undersea cable from Java to Darwin, Australia was linked for the first time to London and the rest of the world.
The second plaque commemorates his wife, Lady Alice Todd. One of the telegraph repeater stations was named Alice Springs in her honour. Alice Springs is now an important city near the centre of Australia.
Charles Todd was one of the founders of the Brougham Place Congregational Church in North Adelaide, and of the Stow Memorial Congregational Church in Adelaide (this building).
Continue to your right and you find the exit in the Eastern Porch, which contains War memorials and a propeller!
