A memorial to the founder of this church, Rev T Q Stow, who established the Congregational Church in this colony, a month after the first ships arrived. In addition to this congregation Rev Thomas Quinton Stow started many others throughout the state. In 1850 he was the first Chairman of the South Australian Congregational Union. However, he also took a leading part in the public affairs of the young colony.
When Stow's health began to fail, Rev C W Evan was appointed in 1855 as co-pastor and about a year later he became sole pastor. It was due to Evan's vision and enthusiasm that this building was erected as 'The Stow Memorial Church' in honour of its founding minister.
