Pentecost 16 – In the scripture readings set for the day, the prophet Amos sends a dire warning to certain of the super-rich who indulge themselves to excess while showing no responsibility towards others; Paul writes passionately to Timothy on the subject of caring for others; and in the parable of Lazarus, Jesus sends another dire warning of the consequences of leading a self-indulgent, uncaring lifestyle in the face of extreme poverty and distress. By cleaning up our own lives, we can make life easier for others. Be rich in good works, and be ready to share. In Australia there are more than 70 organisations dedicated to the alleviation of distress and poverty around the world – in spite of the Australian government's foreign aid budget shrinking year by year.
