Advent 3 – "Delight can't wait - Joy can't wait" – Isaiah has given us a rich tapestry of scenes describing a life of longing, scenes of a flourishing wilderness. The gospel reading from Matthew is quite different, with a presumably despairing John the Baptist locked up on Death Row and asking some friends to find out from Jesus whether he really was the Messiah. Jesus didn't reply with doctrines and creeds; he simply told them to repeat what they had seen – that the blind could see, the deaf could hear, the lame could walk, and so on. What would it be like to live this Christmas and after, in the face of the world's unbearable sorrows? The God of the prophets and of Jesus is not a magic cure-all or a heavenly insurance policy. Feel deeply, because God feels deeply; he invites us to experience a deeper sense of joy that might be very different from happiness. It is a joy that disillusions us from our own well-being, and doesn't depend on circumstances. We are never apart from the gracious embrace of our Creator God.
