Advent 4 – What can't wait? Courage can't wait (Love) – This Christmas the birth narrative of Jesus will be told in a myriad of ways, and they will so often be dumbed down and domesticated. But Christmas is a story of tough love and practical help. 'Immanuel', 'God is with us', is more than a pious phrase; it tells of a God who is with us in tragedy, not causing the tragedy but being in it with us, holding tightly to us and promising never to let go. God's love is animated through peoples' actions with flesh and bone, muscle and sinew. For example, a group of Sikh volunteers recently drove 700km through the night from Melbourne to Braidwood, to deliver 350 boxes of food and water for bushfire-affected communities. And another example: 'Ads-Up' is a network of Australians and friends in Canada and the US, who are working on behalf of refugees on Nauru, Manus and PNG to let them resettle in Canada, which has a scheme for privately sponsored migration at a cost of about $20,000 per migrant. Donations can be made through the Refugee Council of Australia's website.
