SUN 29-DEC-2019 - 11.00 AM Sermon
Rev Dr Greg Elsdon
Christmas 1 – This sermon is largely about refugees. Jesus started life as a political refugee when his parents had to flee with him to the relative safety of Egypt, and the family's escape provoked Herod, the local despot, to issue orders for the murder of other little boys back in Bethlehem. There are countries right now where mothers are weeping uncontrollably over their slaughtered children; in Syria there are enormous humanitarian problems with hundreds of thousands of refugees crowded into camps and communal shelters; and Australia's treatment of refugees in offshore detention centres is cruel and dehumanising. To ignore these issues is to fail to appreciate the full meaning of Jesus as the embodiment of the good news of God's love and grace. Jesus will be found among those refugees; he is to be found in surprising places; his life is a revelation of the heart and will of God.
