Pentecost 19 – The 'Parable of the Persistent Widow' is commonly interpreted in terms of the necessity for persevering in prayer. But if that uncaring judge in the parable is supposed to represent God, it is hardly the same God as revealed in other parables of Jesus. An alternative interpretation is offered – that the widow in the parable is in fact God, and the unrighteous judge is one of the rich and powerful who don't care about the injustices suffered by those beneath them. In this interpretation of the parable, God is pleading with the rich and powerful, that they might respond to the cries of the diadvantaged and helpless.
