SUN 11-AUG-2019 - 11 AM Sermon
Rev Sandy Boyce
Pentecost 9 – In our churches there can be a mismatch between what we claim we stand for and what outsiders actually see, and a church held together mainly by ritual and tradition could be failing to demonstrate the way of Jesus. It is a way that involves a selfless and generous caring for others. In the passage from Luke's gospel, Jesus urges us not to rely on excessive possessions and wealth, things that can't bring much happiness, but to sell off the excess, give the proceeds to the poor, and thereby gain the joy of an everlasting 'treasure in heaven'. Let us be more than a mutual interest group held together by religious ritual, let us be followers of the Jesus way, sharing our various gifts with the world, and sharing them with love. It won't be easy, but we'll be in it together.
