Pentecost 11 – In the Law of Moses there is a rule about resting and not working on the Sabbath. When Jesus healed a crippled woman on a Sabbath, he was told he was breaking the Law because healing was 'work'. There is a tendency for rules to be kept just to say that they have been kept; but God's compassion cannot be constrained by rules and boundaries. With a gentle touch from Jesus, the woman who had been bent double for eighteen years was healed and restored to community – on a Sabbath, as valid a day for healing as any other. Justice, mercy, kindness, healing and compassion are not bound by rules and calendars.
