SUN 31-JAN-2021 - 9.30 AM SermonTPE1 Rev Sandy BoyceCOMM / XXX Epiphany 4 – In Mark's account, Jesus was in a synagogue one Sabbath, doing some serious teaching, when a man with what was described as an "unclean spirit" shouted out that he knew exactly who Jesus was and what he represented, and he wanted Jesus to go away. To everyone's amazement, Jesus healed the man of his "demon possession" with just a few words. Today we would recognise the man's unclean spirit as a sympton of a mental or psychosomatic illness, an affliction that will often exclude us from community. Such illnesses are part of a continuum of inner struggles that we all face in the darker parts of our life journey; and Jesus paid attention to people at risk of exclusion. As a community of Christ, let us seek to understand those living with mental health challenges, and seek to ensure that ignorance and stigmatised responses have no place in our community. The gospel of Jesus Christ is a gospel of hope – a safe space and a spiritual home, for all who seek the hope, love and peace of Jesus Christ.
