Advent 3 – Mary's song, the Magnificat, is a deeply political speech with a threefold thrust – (1) social, with the proud being scattered; (2) political, with the defeat of oppressors and freedom for the victims; and (3) economic, with food for the hungry and hunger for those who withhold food. Mary is portrayed as anything but meek, mild and submissive. She was free, not domestic; she was strong, not submissive; and she was a very courageous woman who spoke out for God's justice, a fundamental expression of Christian discipleship. The example of Mary can be seen as a call for upholding the dignity and rights of women, and as a call for being prepared for God to live within us.
