Pentecost 3 – In the Uniting Church there is currently much sadness over a lack of unity across a spectrum of views, beliefs and theological positions. When Jesus set out on his final journey to Jerusalem, he passed through Samaria where Jews were definitely not welcome. Jews and Samaritans both revered Abraham, Moses and Torah, and they worshiped the same God, but they had parted company, for racial and theological reasons, some time after the return from the Babylonian exile. By travelling through Samaria, Jesus was showing that he was prepared to mix with people whose theology was different. Later in Luke's writing we are told how the gospel would be extended beyond Jerusalem to Samaria, and then to the rest of the world. God loves all people.
Luke 9: 51-62
